Power

Many of the problems technology failures IBM have observed in the past have been
due simply to inadequate power supply controls. The key questions the operational
risk manager should ask are:
Ω Is there UPS or CPS? What does it support (CPU, tape drives, printers, communication
front ends, DASD, LAN servers) and for how long?
Ω Is there a standby generator?
Ω Is there emergency lighting in the computer room?
Ω Where does the power supply enter the building, a single source?
Ω Is there a past history of any power problems? Quantify.
Ω Are there in-line power distribution units to suppress surges or spikes?
