P&L is usually also separated into realized and unrealized P&L. In its current form,
backtesting only compares changes in value of the portfolio with value at risk. For this
comparison, the distinction between realized and unrealized P&L is not important. If
backtesting were extended to compare cash-flow fluctuations with a cash-flow at risk
measure, this distinction would be relevant.
